"PORCELAIN DOLL"

WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF CREATING,
"PORCELAIN DOLL"?

When Andy and I first began talking about this project, I asked him if he would bring a song into the mix. This beautiful mid-tempo ballad was the amazing result. He had melodies but no lyrics. I think I listened to what he had for melodies once and then sorta went off on my own. As it turned out, the melodies were very similar to the ones he had. Maybe the limited exposure resonated more than I thought. Regardless, the lyrics are mine. I like the rhyme scheme of this verse: “Summer simmering/Skin that’s shimmering/Hope’s still glimmering/Shine through.”

When Andy first presented it, he told me he wasn’t sure about the “bossa nova” style. I assured him it would be fine so we kept it that way. The middle section has a counterpoint melody that is the result of using the new melody, with his original one underneath. It gave me a chance to include the name of the piece. Obviously, the song is about a romantic fantasy that’s never fulfilled. There’s the intrigue, desire, second-guessing, internal conflict and acceptance of reality that’s found in a forbidden attraction. Typified by lines like “I’m dangling in the deep/With the secrets that I keep/It’s better if I don’t confide.”
