"THE OFC BRIGADE"
Tom's Words In His Own Words

WHAT WAS THE
PROCESS OF CREATING
"OCF Brigade"?
I had an idea on the keyboard for the beginning section and I started thinking of lyrics. The first thing I thought of was “And if I should slide away, would you miss my face?” But the next line I felt should bring it back to something that's real, something solid! The chords really started making sense to me. They seemed to fit together very well and the melody was something that popped out easily. After I laid down a rough demo, Andy started working with it and molding it into a nice arrangement.
I think it turned out to be a really nice tune. I think it's a “classic piece”! This is one of the three tunes that came out of me finding things around B flat major. It's just a very convenient key for the piano. So the song is really about fear and how we often have unrealistic anxiety over it. It's often fear that prevents us from living up to our potential. Fear causes misery and has an exponential effect on itself. In other words, fear feeds on itself and causes concentric rings of more fear.
